CompareGolf Cart Battery
Golf cart batteries are deep-cycle or lithium batteries designed to provide sustained power to electric golf carts. Historically, most golf carts used lead-acid batteries which have a high energy density, allowing them to store a large amount of energy in a relatively small space. And while more than 70% of carts are still lead-acid today, modern day new golf cart batteries tend to be lithium.
Unlike car batteries, which are designed to provide a burst of power just to start the engine, golf cart batteries need to keep your cart moving the entire time you use it. All golf cart battery types are designed to provide a steady, consistent stream of power to your cart over a longer period of time (typically 8 to 10 hours per charge).
Traditional Golf Cart Batteries
Traditional lead-acid golf cart batteries have a useful life of roughly 6 years and provide reliable power for your cart. They do however require maintenance to keep running properly, including water level checks, cleaning, and plugging into a battery charger / maintainer. They take roughly 8-hours to fully charge. And they lose power delivery as they get closer to empty charge.
If your deep-cell golf cart batteries are older than 6 years old, chances are they may have just died on you or you are beginning to see the signs they're not at "peak" performance.
Lithium Golf Cart Batteries
Lithium batteries for golf carts last 3x - 5x as long as traditional lead-acid batteries, and can fully charge up in as little as 2-3 hours (compared to 8 hours with traditional golf cart batteries). They do not lose power as they lose charge (like you cell phone). So even when a golf cart has 10% battery left, it will still deliver full power to the drivetrain if the batteries are lithium. When to Replace Your Golf Cart Batteries
Whether your golf cart batteries are traditional lead-acid or new-style lithium batteries, they will no doubt wear out over time. And when your batteries do finally die, they are an expensive replacement part for your golf cart. The best way to know if it is truly time to replace your batteries is to test your golf cart batteries. This is done with a simple multi-meter on the terminals of each individual battery in your cart. If your cart won't charge up at all (even after charging your batteries a full 24-hours), and the multimeter on your batteries reads less than 1-volt per battery, then it is time to replace your cart's batteries.
