A golf cart battery charger replenishes the energy stored in your electric golf cart's batteries while not in use. Most chargers are plug into a standard AC wall outlet and then hook up to your golf cart with the matching power plug adapter for your particular make and model. You can think of a golf cart charger like a charger for your phone or laptop, but bigger and more powerful. Gas powered golf carts do not use battery chargers.
Golf Cart Battery Charger FAQs
When Should You Replace Your Charger?
If you have golf cart batteries that are under 5 years old, and your cart is losing power faster than usual, or if it's no longer going as fast as it used to, then chances are you may have a bad golf cart charger. A bad charger may not properly charge your batteries up after each use, or may not properly maintain them once they are fully charged.
How long does it take to charge a golf cart?
How long it will take to charge a golf cart depends on four factors:
- The quality of your batteries
- How discharged your golf cart batteries are
- Whether or not your batteries are lithium or lead-acid
- The quality of your golf cart battery charger
In most cases, standard lead-acid batteries can charge up from dead in 8-10 hours. While Lithium golf cart batteries can fully charge from dead in just 3 hours, and can be 80% charged in only 1 hour.
Should I charge the golf cart every time I use it?
Yes. While we recommend running your batteries down to zero the first few uses of your cart, after that it is best practice for the batteries to be fully charged at all times (on a proper maintainer). As long as you have a high-quality charger, like the ones sold here at the Golf Cart Tire Supply, then your automatic shut-off will kick in once the batteries are fully charged. Once the shut-off kicks in, the batteries will be "maintained" from overcharging.
Can Battery Chargers increase Battery Life?
Yes, by using a high-quality charger that ensures the batteries in your cart remain charged safely, a charger increases your cart's battery longevity as well as performance during use.
A high-quality battery charger will charge up your cart on a pre-programmed charge curve. So when your batteries are low, good chargers will more quickly charge your cart within safe parameters (usually halfway) to get you the most amount of charge possible quickly. But once this initial burst charge completes, the charger will lower the level of input charge as your batteries get closer to full charger to prevent damage or "over-charging". This is why the first 50% of charging might only take 3 hours, but the remaining 50% can take 5-7 additional hours for your cart.
